It’s Time for the Beach

The Gulf can get too cold in the winter months to allow for year round swimming, but as the air temperatures rise, so do the water temperatures and the hardier souls begin to make their way back in the water. Grab your gear, head to the white sands, and plan on spending at least one day of your spring journey, swimming, tanning, or simply walking along shore’s edge, feeling sea breezes tangle your hair as the water curls around your bare feet and ankles with every step. Even if you don’t swim, your day at the beach will still be good for your soul.

Pool Time

Not everyone likes to swim in the sea, even if they are the perfect temperature, and whether its still a little cool or you just don’t swim where other creatures live, the heated swimming pool of our Dunes community will offer you the fun you seek, the tanning opportunities you crave, and another way to relax outside on a beautiful spring day.

Angler’s Delight

The joy of sitting seaside with pole in hand and cooler at your side is one that can’t be overrated and in the spring, the fish are biting in all the best of ways. Spring is the season for redfish, speckled trout, kingfish, and cobia with April being the peak fishing month. Drop a line from the Horace Caldwell Pier for a nominal fee, fish for free off the jetties, or hire a charter and head out to the deep waters where the trophy fish may end up hanging off the business end of your line. Fishing licenses are required and can be purchased at fishing stores or online here.

A Good Walk Spoiled

Yes, golf is a sport that can be participated in year round, but in the spring months, even a bad day on the course will be an experience that you will never forget. Palmilla Beach Golf, a traditional Scottish links course located at 258 Snapdragon, is a 9-hole course originally designed by the esteemed Arnold Palmer offers sea views, a driving range, practice greens, and an extra 3-hole loop that allows guests to play 9, 12, 18 or even 21 holes on a day that is going extra well.

It’s for the Birds

Port Aransas offers six spots along the Great Texas Coastal Birding Trail, including Joan & Scott Holt Paradise Pond and the Leonabelle Turnbull Birding Center and spring is the apex of birding season. Grab your binoculars, your favorite birding apps, and head to either of the two places listed above or simply sit outside on the balcony of your vacation escape and spend some time documenting the sea birds you see flying around. Mustang Island State Park is another popular birding site destined to bring wildlife watchers great joy and success.

What’s SUP?

Stand up paddleboarding has been around for thousands of years, originally used as a way of sneaking up on enemies during war times, but today it is a sport that is known for offering peace, serenity, and incredible core strength to all who partake in the sport. When the sun is shining, the birds are singing, and you are paddling around the waters on a SUP board rented from Island Surf Shop and Kayaks, 130 E Avenue G, you will be living your best life.
