Fishing Journey to Port Aransas

HomeArea GuideJourneys to Port AransasFishing Journey to Port Aransas

You came to Port Aransas for Texas warmth, fun, sand, sun, and water of the Gulf of Mexico. There are plenty of beach activities to fill your time, but the anglers of the group will want to make sure they pack in plenty of fishing, too. After all, Port A is the “Fishing Capital of Texas.” Pack up all your fishing gear, stock the cooler with snacks and drinks, and head out for a day on the water. You may even pack your swim suit for a refreshing dip, water sport, or some sunbathing afterward. Make sure to obtain a Texas fishing license before starting your fishing journey to Port Aransas.

Bay & Shallow Water

The waterways around Mustang Island are the perfect place for bay and shallow water fishing. Gather your gear and head out on the calmer waters of Aransas Bay and shallower waters. Rent a boat from the marina at the bay and set your own schedule or join a charter that will take you to the best spots. You can expect to hook redfish, flounder, black drum, snapper, and trout during excursions to these areas.

Horace Caldwell Pier

The Horace Caldwell Pier is just steps from your Dunes vacation rental! Since the Dunes is the only condo building right on the sandy shores of the Gulf, it’s only natural you’d head out to the pier that’s just steps away for some fun. The pier is also a great place to cast a line. You can fish 24/7, but if you’re coming from out of town and need supplies, there are pier attendants available during regular business hours (9 a.m. – 5 p.m.). Bait, tackle, and equipment are available for sale in the Keepers at the pier shop. Admission to the pier is $3/person plus $4/pole and is currently cash-only. Children under six-years-old are free and discounts are available for military and seniors (65+). Anglers dropping a line off the pier have come back with tarpon, red and black drum, catfish, spotted sea trout, as well as blacktip and bonnethead sharks!

Deep Sea

Charter a fishing tour or brave the deep waters of the Gulf on your own. The added adrenaline and excitement of a deep sea excursion on the Gulf is one an angler won’t want to miss, and the waters off the shores of Port A are some of the best. Cast a line in hopes of snagging kingfish, sailfish, marlin, tuna, and much more. Some charter companies even offer shark fishing excursions for an extra adrenaline rush. These adventures typically set sail in the evening and night hours.

Jetties

Fish Pass Jetty is a little further south down the island from Horace Caldwell Pier, but worth the extra steps. The jetty spans a national park to make for an interesting outing. Enjoy surf fishing or cast a line in the bay. The South Jetty is another gem where nearshore species come close to shore and inshore species enjoy the calmer water. If you’d like to go in search of the day’s catch on the North Jetty and San Jose Island, hop on the boat that leaves from Fisherman’s Wharf. It’s the only way to access the North Jetty as well as the uninhabited shores of San Jose Island.

Port Aransas Fisherman’s Wharf

When you’re on a fishing excursion to Port A, a logical place to start might be a place with “fisherman” in the name. Start your fishing journey to Port Aransas from the wharf, where you can charter a fishing excursion for you and your fellow anglers.

Offshore fishing excursions take you out into the depths of the Gulf of Mexico. Charter a trip for just six-hours in search of your next big fish story, all the way up to two full days on the water. All anglers 17 and older must have a valid Texas saltwater fishing license before departure from the dock.
