Texas has played a large part in the country’s military history, with much of its Gulf Coast shoreline serving as some of the country’s first defenses. For nearly 50 years, the USS Lexington was a part of those defenses. The ship is docked in Corpus Christi Bay, just across the ship channel from downtown Corpus Christi and is open daily. Operating hours are seasonal, and are 9 a.m. – 5 p.m. Labor Day-Memorial Day, and 9 a.m. – 6 p.m. Memorial Day-Labor Day. Call 1-800-LADY-LEX (523-9539) for information.
The Ship
Originally named the USS Cabot and commissioned in 1943 and working until its final decommissioning in 1991, it was the oldest working carrier in the U.S. Navy. It was renamed the USS Lexington after word was received a boat currently carrying the name had been sunk in the Coral Sea. It then joined the Fifth Fleet at Pearl Harbor. The battle-scarred boat was sunk no less than four times, earning it the nickname “The Blue Ghost.”
Escape Rooms
You may have experienced an escape room on land, but on the USS Lexington, you can have the experience at sea, too. Choose from three different themed rooms.
Flight Deck
Get an up-close look at 20 aircraft, anti-aircraft guns, landing gear, and more for a true taste of naval history. Make sure to see the navigation bridge and the plank, too!
Pearl Harbor Exhibit & Joe Jessel 3D Mega Theater
The carrier was most active during WWII, from its commission and throughout battles in the Pacific Theater. The exhibit features a state-of-the-art multi-media experience including 1/2400-scale sets of ships docked in position, realistic battle animations, and a 4D experience like no other. Flight Simulator
