To be perfectly frank, for most people the beach is the only place they want to play during the kickoff to summer, and we understand completely. We live here and most days all we want to do is go to the beach, relax, swim, and just forget the real world exists, so of course, it is the main attraction! The Port Aransas beaches are amongst the most beautiful in the world, offering pristine beauty and a serene vibe, and many of our vacation rentals will provide beach basics, so you won’t have to lug beach towels, chairs, and umbrellas across the country, nor will you have to buy any of the same. Spend every day all day chilling at water’s edge, sipping your favorite tropical beverages, and working on your tan so you can return home with a golden glow, leaving all your friends and family green with envy. Oh, and don’t forget that bonfires are allowed on our beaches, adding romance to your nighttime shenanigans.
Searching for Shells on San Jose Island
Your favorite souvenirs may be that handful of shells you found while walking along our Port A beaches, but the best shells may be found on the uninhabited island, San Jose Island, accessible by ferry and offering adventures you may not be used to in your urban centered real life. Birdwatchers love this wild section of land and anglers wish they never had to leave, and the shells that you find will be plentiful, colorful, and serve as unique souvenirs that remind you of all the good times you had during your Memorial Day Texas vacation.
Road Trip to Corpus Christi
The town of Corpus Christi lies just 30+ miles away from Port Aransas, and we can’t think of a better way to honor Memorial Day than with a visit to the USS Lexington Museum, located at 2914 N Shoreline Boulevard, and offering the opportunity to explore a genuine World War II aircraft carrier. Yes, the ship itself is the museum, and as you step aboard, you may hear the echoes of naval men shouting orders, of airplanes taking off and landing, and the sound of chow halls at lunch, but only if you listen closely, because those days are long gone. Today, visitors can walk the decks, explore the rooms that were once a hub of activity, and marvel at the different lifestyle that was experienced by sailors at sea and at war. Offering a mega theater that airs movies about the ship’s not so distant past, self-guided and tour guide led tours, and a Pearl Harbor exhibit that never fails to move those who view it, a day trip to the USS Lexington really can be the best way to honor those who served and experienced the ultimate sacrifice.
Time to Eat
The food we eat on vacation often makes its way into our stories, and when it’s time to eat, your culinary adventures in Port A are sure to be memorable ones. Enjoy a casual seafood dinner and views of the Gulf at Grumbles Seafood Co, located at 850 Tarpon Street. The fish you are eating may have just been swimming in the waters behind this wonderful restaurant and you can’t get much fresher than that. (Fresh does make a difference!) Island Café, 301 S Alister Street, is closed on Tuesdays, but is open for breakfast and lunch every other day, and although it isn’t a beachfront eatery, you will feel as if you are dining under the sea as you devour giant plates of biscuits and gravy thanks to the murals of fish, seahorses, and the aquarium with mermaids sitting on its edge found at the front door.
