Family-Friendly Activities in Port Aransas

HomeArea GuideThings to Do in Port AransasFamily-Friendly Activities in Port Aransas

You came to Port A for Texas warmth, fun, and the sand and water at the beach along the Gulf of Mexico. No matter when you come, there are also plenty of family-friendly activities in Port Aransas that are fun for the whole family.

Beaches

Every island vacation should include time at the beach. Pack up your gear and head out for a day on the sand or playing in the water. Spread out your blanket and plant your beach umbrella and lounge on the sand with a book or step out into the sun for sunbathing. Swim in the waves of the Gulf, help the kids build sandcastles, or take a family walk or run on the beach for some exercise.

Beach Carts

A beach buggy golf cart is one of the bast ways to experience the beaches of Port A, and it’s fun for all ages. Most carts have blinkers, headlights and taillights, seat belts, and other features that make them street-legal, so you can go from the road to the beach and start your day of Port A fun and excitement quickly. There is often a minimum age to rent the vehicle, but all drivers must hold a valid state-issued drivers’ license from their home state to get behind the wheel.

Chapel on the Dunes

Learn a bit more about the area’s history. The historic 1930s church was built by the Carter family, which includes former Texas poet laureate Aline Carter. The church no longer holds religious services, but you can tour the church building and grounds during tours organized by the Port A Museum. The church is even available for special events.

Fishing

The activity is fun, easy, and enjoyable for all ages, so it makes the perfect addition to your family-friendly activities in Port Aransas. Charter a fishing excursion or rent some gear and ask about the best fishing spots if you’d rather strike out on your own. Check out the bays and shallow waters, piers, jetties, and more to see what’s biting in the Fishing Capital of Texas. If you’re looking for an adrenaline rush with your catch of the day, head out on a deep sea trip in search of kingfish, marlin, tuna, and others who lurk in deep waters. However you cast a line, make sure to have the appropriate Texas fishing license first.

Lydia Ann Lighthouse

The Lydia Ann Lighthouse, also called the Aransas Pass Light Station, was built in 1857. The lighthouse is not accessible by road, so you’ll need to take a cruise past it in your own vessel or get a good view of it from nearby Roberts Point Park.

Marine Life

Charter a tour and head out in search of dolphins, whales, and other sea life. Make sure to bring your camera to catch glimpses of the majestic animals, as well as the breathtaking views of the Gulf. Daytime and sunset tours are available from many companies, and some allow you to bring your own snacks and drinks for the perfect family-friendly outing.

Red Dragon Pirate Cruise

The cruise is fun for the kids and kids at heart of the group, and you can sail the high seas like the pirates of old! Cruise the waters of the Lydia Ann Channel and take part in dolphin watching, sword fighting, treasure hunting, cannon fire, and lots of pirate excitement! Make sure to pack your camera to capture all the memories and pirate fun. Enjoy soft drinks and snacks, as well as beer, wine, pina coladas, rum, tequila, and whiskey-based drinks for the adult pirates in your group.

Surf Camp

If you live in an inland location, you likely don’t get to the water much, or participate in the many fun activities it has to offer. Learn to surf on your trip to Port A. You can try windsurfing or traditional surfing along the Port A coast. Professional instructors provide private lessons that give you the skills to rent your own board and surf the waves on your own. Many companies accommodate children as young as five, but make sure to check before booking.
